Starting a mom blog is a wonderful way to share your experiences, connect with other parents, and even create a source of income. Whether you want to document your parenting journey, offer tips, or build a supportive community, a mom blog is an excellent creative outlet. It really got me through my first few years of parenting!

Essential Steps to Start a Mom Blog

1. Define Your Niche (or not)

A successful blog has a clear focus. A “mom blog” is a niche itself, so don’t feel pressured to focus on just one thing. It’s perfectly acceptable to have more of a “lifestyle” blog where you cover lots of different things.

However, it is easier to rank higher and get more blog traffic with a very specific niche. Consider what you’re passionate about and what makes your perspective unique. Some ideas include:

  • Parenting tips for new moms
  • DIY crafts and activities for kids
  • Meal planning and family recipes
  • Mental health for moms

Or write about them all if it makes you happy! You can see on this blog I cover a pretty wide variety of topics.

2. Choose a Memorable Blog Name

Your blog name should reflect your personality and niche. Keep it simple, catchy, and easy to spell. Try to get a .com for your domain extension, as those are the easiest for remember for people. Also avoid hyphenated names because people tend to type those in wrong all the time.

I actually was making fun of mom blog names when I named this one Momtastic Mommy Blog and wasn’t expecting it to turn into a real blog, but here we are.

3. Set Up Your Blog

To start a professional-looking blog, follow these steps:

  • Pick a Blogging Platform: Popular choices include WordPress (like this blog), Blogger or Wix. WordPress offers flexibility and scalability, making it a top choice.
  • Select a Theme: Look for a clean, responsive design that suits your niche. Many free and premium themes cater specifically to bloggers.
  • Define Your Categories: This can be one of the toughest things to do and often changes as your blog grows. Start with a few main categories and you can add more from there.
  • Start Writing: Once you are set up, the fun begins! Start writing and filling in your categories with posts. This will help you see how the blog looks and performs with content.

4. Write Compelling Content

Start with a few posts that introduce your blog and provide value to your readers. Write in a conversational tone that resonates with other moms. Authenticity is key—share your real experiences and lessons learned. People want to hear YOUR voice, not AI generated content.

Don’t feel pressured to post every day. Post when you can, and your blog will continue to grow. You want this experience to be enjoyable and not just another chore on your mile-long mom to-do list.

5. Use Eye-Catching Images

Photos make your blog more engaging. Use personal images to tell your story or browse free stock photo websites like Unsplash or Pexels for professional-quality visuals. Try to put at least 1 – 2 photo in every post.

Be sure to add Alt Image descriptions when posting your photos. This will help with your SEO and get you off on the right foot. I didn’t do this at first and am constantly going back and adding descriptions to photos.

6. Promote Your Blog

Once your blog is live, share it with the world. Tell everyone you started a mom blog! Start sharing your posts online and adding your blog link to all your profiles.

  • Social Media: Platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest are ideal for mom bloggers. Post snippets of your blog and engage with your audience. Pin your photos to Pinterest and add links to your blog in Instagram stories.
  • Mom Communities: Join Facebook groups or parenting forums to connect with others and share your blog.
  • Connect with Bloggers: Find and comment on other mom blogs to create more engagement.
  • SEO Optimization: Research keywords and learn how to use them in your posts

7. Monetize Your Blog

Once you’ve built an audience, explore ways to earn income:

  • Affiliate marketing: Recommend products you love and earn commissions. A lot of mom blogs (including this one) partner with Amazon.
  • Sponsored posts: Collaborate with brands that align with your values.
  • Digital products: Create and sell e-books, printables, or courses.
  • Add Ads: You can activate ads with WordPress or add Google Ad Words or another type of ad partnership to generate income.
  • Get Your Finances Ready: When you start earning an income, you may want to have a business bank account set up to keep your finances organized.
You can look into opening a Westpac bank account online if you live in Australia, but there are also many online banks available all over the world.

8. Stay Consistent and Authentic

Consistency builds trust and keeps readers coming back. Create a content schedule that works for you, and don’t be afraid to share the highs and lows of motherhood—it’s what makes your blog relatable and inspiring. I always feel like my first couple years of blogging were just me complaining all the time about how hard it really was.

Start That Mom Blog

Starting a mom blog is about more than just writing; it’s about connecting, inspiring, and sharing the joy and challenges of motherhood. With the right approach, your blog can become a meaningful space for both you and your readers.

So, if you are considering a mom blog and don’t know where to start, my advice is to just leap in and get started. You don’t have to advertise you are doing it until you are ready!

I’ve been blogging for 10 years now, and I absolutely love going to work every day. It started as a side job and outlet for my frustrations and eventually evolved into a full-time job. It didn’t happen overnight, so remember to give it some time! Just start writing and enjoy the experience along the way.
