Considering a Plant Based Diet, Sort Of

I am currently watching a very interesting documentary on Netflix called The Game Changers about a quest for the optimal diet for human performance and health. I had no idea it was going to be about a plant-based diet, but it quickly took a turn into vegan town pretty quickly.

I tried to be a vegetarian once in high school, after we read Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle.” It lasted about two days after my mom said, “That’s fine, you need to cook all your own food.”

If you haven’t read “The Jungle,” it was written in 1906 before we had regulations in the meat packing industry. It is graphic and disturbing, and offers a powerful portrayal of the harsh conditions and exploitation faced by immigrant workers in the Chicago stockyards at the beginning of the 20th century.

The novel also delves into the corruption and unsanitary practices within the industry, shedding light on issues such as food safety and workers’ rights. The book sparked significant public outcry and led to the passage of regulatory legislation in the United States. (thank goodness!)

Now that I am older and very used to making my own meals, it’s more realistic for me to make a diet change.

Is a Plant-Based Diet a Game Changer?

I feel like the documentary is very one-sided, with an “all meat is bad” angle. They are saying any meat product, even milk, eggs and fish do bad things to your blood.

I can’t imagine how tough it would be to go totally vegan and never have wonderful things like cheese. Seems like it would suck the joy out of eating.

Not to mention the social aspect. Have you even gone to dinner with a vegan? I had one nearly ruin my birthday dinner once, when she pitched a fit that her vegetables had been tainted because they were on the same hibachi grill as my shrimp.

The documentary also hand picks success stories of vegan champion athletes to prove their point and doesn’t take into account the huge amount of non-vegan athletes also at the top of their game.

So, I’m not entirely convinced that you can give all the credit to their plant-based diet.

Meat in Moderation

While I do feel the documentary sets out on an agenda, it was convincing enough for me to reexamine my eating habits and want to improve them.

I don’t plan to entirely cut out meat, but I do plan to cut way down. This will be a challenge for someone who always goes for the steak option when there is one. I love a good steak dinner.

So, I will be making a conscientious effort to cut out a lot of red meat and make more of my meals meat-free. I plan to look up some recipes and things I can do without meat, as meat is the star of every meal I normally cook.

So, while I have no aspirations to go vegan, I do aspire to become more open to meat-free meals and try to reprogram my thinking that a meal must have meat to be filling.

Wish me luck on this new vegetable-filled journey!

In Other News, I Just Missed Meat-Free March

Meat-Free March is a global initiative that invites individuals to adopt a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle for the entire month of March. The goal is to raise awareness about the environmental, ethical, and health benefits of reducing meat consumption.

Participants commit to exploring plant-based alternatives, embracing new recipes, and discovering the diverse array of flavors and nutrients found in fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, and plant-based proteins.

Meat-free April doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, but I’m not going totally meat free so maybe by the time March rolls around again next year I can give this a try.

Why Participate in Meat-Free March?

Environmental Impact

Reducing meat consumption is one of the most impactful actions individuals can take to mitigate climate change. The livestock industry is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and water pollution. By opting for plant-based meals, participants can reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future for the planet.

Health Benefits

A plant-based diet has been linked to numerous health benefits, including lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. Meat-Free March provides an opportunity for participants to explore new, nutritious foods that can boost energy levels, support weight management, and improve overall well-being.

Ethical Considerations

Many people choose to reduce or eliminate meat consumption due to ethical concerns about animal welfare. Meat-Free March encourages participants to reflect on their food choices and consider the impact of their diet on animals, promoting compassion and mindfulness in food consumption.

How to Make the Most of Meat-Free March

  1. Experiment with New Recipes: Explore a variety of plant-based recipes, from hearty vegetable stews to flavorful tofu stir-fries. Get creative in the kitchen and discover the delicious possibilities of plant-based cooking.
  2. Explore Plant-Based Alternatives: Try meat substitutes such as plant-based burgers, sausages, and meatballs. Many supermarkets offer a wide range of plant-based options that mimic the taste and texture of meat.
