There’s a lot of alcohol substitutes being advertised on social media right now, from kratom seltzers like Mitra-9 to mysterious herb blends designed to relax or ease social anxiety. It made me wonder, is kratom a good substitute for alcohol?
Kratom has a lot of buzz, for packing a buzz, both good and bad. I gave it a try myself to see if it would encourage me to give up my evening glass of wine.
Mitra-9 sent me a variety pack of their kratom and kava seltzers to try out, so this post focuses on this particular brand of kratom. I have tried other brands before, and they were pretty gross, tbh. So much that I couldn’t even finish some of them. I’m sharing this because it was surprisingly good!

Enjoying Mitra-9 Kratom Seltzer as an Alcohol Alternative
I know a lot of people trying to cut down or give up alcohol, and many of them mention one thing they miss is the ritual of that end of the day winddown. You pour yourself a drink, take a sip, slow down and immediately relax a little.
You can do the same thing with kratom or kava seltzers and put them in a wine glass or martini glass, so you still get that ritual experience.

Kratom, scientifically known as Mitragyna speciosa, is an evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia, particularly in countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The leaves of the kratom tree have been traditionally used for their medicinal properties and as a natural stimulant.
In recent years, kratom has gained popularity (and notoriety) in the West for its potential uses and benefits.
Uses of Kratom
- Pain Relief: Kratom leaves contain alkaloids that have analgesic properties, which can help alleviate chronic pain.
- Mood Enhancement: Some individuals use kratom as a way to improve their mood and combat symptoms of depression and anxiety.
- Energy Booster: In low doses, kratom can act as a stimulant, providing users with an energy boost.
Benefits of Kratom
- Natural Alternative: For individuals seeking natural remedies, kratom offers an alternative to conventional pharmaceuticals.
- Potential Addiction Aid: Some proponents believe that kratom may help in managing opioid withdrawal symptoms, although more research is needed in this area.
- Traditional Medicine: In its native regions, kratom has been used for centuries as a traditional medicine for various ailments.
While kratom may offer certain benefits, it’s important to note that its usage and legal status vary by location. Additionally, as with any substance, it should be used responsibly. Too much of anything is never good for you.
How Does Kratom Make You Feel?
I know what you really want to know is whether it actually makes you feel any different. The answer is a definite Yes. Sometimes too much, so you need to start slowly.
A little kratom, ingested slowly (sip that drink!) gives you a fun little energetic buzz. Too much kratom, drank too fast, makes you feel really weird. You get “Jell-o legs”, and the room may spin. Once you reach that point, you are probably going to barf.
Kratom isn’t like CBD. I could gobble CBD gummies by the handful and not feel all that different. But kratom needs to be approached with caution.
Did I Give Up My Evening Wine?
So, did I give up my evening glass of wine?
Sometimes.
On nights when I know I have to get up really early the next day, I drink a kratom seltzer instead of alcohol. So yes, in that respect kratom can be a good substitute for alcohol. I find even after I’m done with my drink, I don’t want an alcoholic drink. Alcohol and kratom don’t mix.
And then on some nights, I have that glass of wine or a martini. After all, it’s all about moderation and indulging responsibly.

So you’re happy to swap alcohol for an opioid? – My two cents. Do more research. You might find it’s not all that and a bag of crisps.
I do tend to do a lot of research, which is why I know kratom isn’t an opioid, though it has some similarities and if often used to treat opioid withdrawal. And I don’t consider it “all that and a bag of chips” but more of the occasional Dorito snack.
It works for me as a substitute for alcohol when I want to get up and do yoga at 6AM. Sipping an occasional seltzer instead of a glass of wine has been very beneficial to my overall health.
This was an interesting read! It’s great that you explored using kratom seltzers as an alcohol alternative. The ritual of winding down with a drink is something many people miss when cutting back on alcohol, so kratom could be an option for those looking to relax without the hangover. It’s also helpful that you mentioned the importance of starting slow, as kratom can affect people in different ways. Thanks for sharing your experience and the tip on using it for early-morning wakeups—I might give it a try myself!
Yep, it’s the whole evening “winding down” thing. The only issue with the kratom seltzer is that it doesn’t go as well with cheese, lol.
Kratom may help with alcohol hangovers by offering pain relief, boosting energy, and promoting relaxation, easing common hangover symptoms
