
Children are surprisingly good at adapting. They will drag a chair closer to the television, lean over a worksheet, or quietly decide that reading is “boring” without ever announcing that the words look fuzzy. To them, the way they see may simply feel normal.
John D. Olkowski, MD, from EyeSight Hawaii, leads a practice offering comprehensive eye care and adult procedures, including LASIK in Hawaii [1]. With children, though, the first clue may be a change in behavior rather than a clear complaint about blurry vision.
A seat close to the television may mean nothing on its own. Squinting across the classroom or bringing every book close makes the habit more worth noticing.
Squinting Can Be a Child’s Way of Making Things Clearer
An occasional squint in bright sunlight is not unusual. Repeated squinting while trying to see the television, a classroom board, a face across the room, or small print deserves more attention.
You may also notice your child closing one eye, tilting their head, or turning their face during certain visual tasks. These little adjustments can become so automatic that the child does not think to mention them.
Children do not always complain about blurry vision, especially when only one eye is affected [2]. In some cases, the stronger eye makes up for the weaker one, leaving few obvious symptoms [8].
Instead of asking only, “Can you see that?” try questions that give your child more room to describe what they notice. You might ask whether the words look sharp or fuzzy, whether the teacher’s writing is clear from their seat, or whether one eye sees better than the other.
A child may answer yes because they can see the object, even when its details look fuzzy.
Pay attention to whether the squinting happens across the room, during close work, or both. That simple detail can be useful at an eye appointment.
“She squints whenever she looks across the room” is much more useful than “I think something is wrong with her eyes.”
Sitting Close to Screens Is Not Always Just a Habit
Some children sit close to everything. They want to be near the action, they like the sound, or they have claimed the best spot before a sibling can get there. Sitting near a screen on its own does not tell you much.
A change in distance can be more revealing. A child who used to watch comfortably from the couch but now moves closer every time may be trying to make details easier to see.
The same may be true if they hold a tablet, book, or handheld game unusually close, especially when squinting or eye rubbing happens too. Holding objects close and struggling to see distant details are among the signs associated with refractive errors in children [2].
Look beyond entertainment screens. Does your child lean very close to a worksheet? Do they walk toward a sign that everyone else can read from several feet away? Do they sit near the television and bring books close to their nose?
Repeated behavior across several activities tells you more than one evening spent watching cartoons from the floor.
After a long stretch on a tablet, your child may start blinking hard, rubbing their eyes, or asking to stop. Screen breaks can ease temporary eye strain and blurry vision [7]. If the discomfort continues or also appears with books and homework, mention that broader pattern at an eye appointment.
Reading Avoidance May Look Like Boredom or Frustration
A child who dislikes reading may sigh, stall, wander away, ask for snacks, and somehow need the bathroom the moment a book opens. That can look like ordinary homework resistance. Sometimes it is. Sometimes the task is visually uncomfortable.
Bringing the page unusually close, closing one eye, rubbing the eyes, or reporting blurry words may point to visual discomfort. Losing a place or skipping lines can also happen with language-based reading difficulties, so those behaviors need broader evaluation rather than being treated as proof of an eye problem [3].
Some children become frustrated because they understand a story when someone reads it aloud but have trouble staying with the words on the page. Others may avoid detailed crafts, puzzles, or homework that requires sustained close attention.
Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability rather than a vision disorder, and vision therapy is not considered a treatment for dyslexia [3]. An eye evaluation can identify a separate refractive or eye-coordination concern, but it should not replace an educational or developmental assessment when one is needed.
Ask your child’s teacher what they have noticed. Useful details might include whether the child:
- avoids copying from the board
- does better when text is larger
- becomes restless during close work
- brings worksheets unusually close
- shows a recent change in reading confidence or school performance
The right glasses can help when blurry vision is one part of the problem. A 2023 review found improvements in mathematics, literacy, and reading fluency after children received needed vision correction. The review included more than 25,000 children across nine studies, although the results may not carry over equally to every child or school setting [4].
An eye exam can rule out a correctable vision problem while parents and teachers continue looking at the other reasons a child may be struggling.
When Headaches, Eye Rubbing, or School Changes Deserve a Closer Look
Children get headaches for many reasons, including illness, stress, migraines, dehydration, lack of sleep, and vision problems. The timing can tell you more than the headache alone.
A headache that repeatedly appears after reading, homework, or other close work is worth documenting. Farsightedness can make some children work harder to focus at close distances, while difficulties using the eyes together may be associated with tired eyes, headaches, or blurred and double vision during reading [5].
Jot down when the headaches happen for a week. Include what your child was doing beforehand and whether the headache came with blurry vision, double vision, nausea, or sensitivity to light. A few specific notes are easier to discuss with a pediatrician than a general memory that the headaches happen “pretty often.”
Eye rubbing also needs context. Most children rub their eyes when they are tired. Frequent rubbing may also accompany irritation, allergies, or blurry vision. Nearsightedness in children can be associated with squinting, headaches, eye rubbing, and difficulty seeing distant objects such as classroom writing [6].
School changes may be the quietest clue of all. A child may stop volunteering to read, ask to move closer to the front, become less interested in detailed projects, or appear distracted during lessons that require a lot of reading or copying.
When these changes are new or appear alongside squinting, headaches, or trouble seeing at certain distances, they are worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
Contact your child’s pediatrician or an eye care professional when symptoms persist, worsen, or interfere with school and everyday activities. Seek prompt medical care for a change in vision, intense eye pain, or a serious eye injury [9]. Eyes that frequently seem unusually sensitive to light should also be mentioned to your child’s doctor [10].

Families should still call ahead to confirm which location and provider can evaluate their child. A pediatrician can also help arrange a pediatric ophthalmology referral when needed [3].
Not every squint needs an urgent appointment. Still, a few notes about when it happens can make the next conversation with your child’s doctor more useful.
