Self-Care During Pregnancy: Small Rituals That Help New Moms Thrive

When a pregnancy is announced, experienced moms often share a common piece of advice: make the most of those nine months. It’s the last stretch of time, they say, when there’s room to truly focus on personal well-being and the things that bring joy.

It’s wise advice worth following.

For anyone at the beginning of their pregnancy and looking for inspiration on everyday self-care habits, here are some thoughtful ways to make the most of this special time.

Enjoy Delicious Meals (by Preparing Them)

Pregnancy is a time for revising and changing your dietary habits. Don’t follow the old paradigm – you should not start eating for two! Around 300 additional calories per day is all you need to stay strong and healthy.

If you are into cooking, now you finally have time to improve your culinary skills. Explore the food you should include in your meals and what to avoid.

Try new recipes. Consult the internet – social media offers a plethora of interesting food accounts. Discuss it with your healthcare provider to ensure you’re giving your body and your baby everything they need.

Look at cooking as both a physical activity and a source of relaxation. Even a half-hour meal prep will make your body move and get your mind excited by a creative task. For many, meal prep is a feel-good endeavor, increasing the sense of accomplishment as you make a delicious meal from scratch. Especially if you are doing it without any rush.

Treat Your Body with Daily Walks

Unless otherwise recommended, include walking and mild physical activities in your daily routines. Spending time outdoors will both improve your mood and keep you active. Walking also has a meditative power. It keeps you present while allowing you to relax.

Some would say that walking is boring. It doesn’t have to be. You can make it interesting by taking photos of facades, flowers, animals, the sky, sunsets, whatever you find worth capturing. Imagine the emotions and memories these photos will evoke as you go through them once you become a mom.

Are there alternatives? Of course!

You can try prenatal yoga or other pregnancy-appropriate exercises. Learn about the dos and don’ts of exercise during pregnancy and talk to your OB/GYN to hear their take on the matter. The more you know, the better positioned you’ll be to choose an activity that will add variety to your pregnancy days and keep you safe.

Spa Day in the Comfort of Your Home

You can schedule a relaxing massage or a pedicure with a professional if that’s what you enjoy. But as your pregnancy progresses, it might be better to avoid beauty treatments, as many are not suitable for certain stages of pregnancy. Again, ask your doctor and follow their advice.

You can have a spa day at home and make it as enjoyable as if you were in a salon. Anything as simple as a calming bath, neck massage, hair treatment, or a face mask will make you feel good about yourself and relax before bed.

People often say that soon-to-be moms have a pregnancy glow that makes them beautiful. It’s true. But an occasional body or face routine will do no harm – if anything, it will add to mama’s wellbeing. It will keep her body nurtured and serve as a unique anti-stress treatment.

Just You and the Book

Do you have a TBR (to be read) list? If your answer is yes, pregnancy is a great time to catch up on your reading.

Imagine a cozy afternoon: the temperature is perfect, you’ve prepared your favorite hot beverage, the blanket is waiting on the sofa, ready for you to snuggle under it and dive into an adventure between the book covers. On regular busy days, that may seem like a fairy tale, but during pregnancy, that could be your daily treat.

Do you know other pregnant women who like to read? Suggest starting a book club. You can get together once a month, discuss a book, and, of course, share how your pregnancies are going. They say it takes a village to raise a child, but there’s nothing like having a community of women sharing the same experiences (and passion for books).

As your child grows, try to continue many of the same habits practiced during pregnancy — reading, taking walks, putting on face masks, and cooking. The routines aren’t as regular, but they fit naturally into the rhythm of life with a baby.

That period of self-care during pregnancy laid the foundation for today. Those simple rituals provided both calm and strength, preparing her for this new chapter — one that’s as beautiful as it is demanding.
