Growing Your Own Terrarium

The instructions were very easy to follow, and my son had fun pouring each item in and setting up the figurines. It doesn’t take all that long, so this will keep the kids entertained for about 20 minutes.

It does glow right away, so they do have fun getting that instant gratification. We took ours in the bathroom to see it glow.

After that, you keep the seeds moist with the mister that is included. By the second day we could see a little bit of sprouting and by the 4th day it was really growing.

Our terrarium after about a week

Overall, it was a neat little project. My son abandoned his misting duties pretty early, so I kept it going after that. And once it was done growing, we didn’t do the second round. But now he knows what a terrarium is!

What is a Terrarium?

A terrarium is a transparent container used to grow plants or sometimes small animals, creating a self-contained ecosystem. It’s designed to replicate the natural environment, providing a controlled space for plants to thrive and sometimes house small creatures.

Key Components of a Terrarium:

  1. Container: Typically made of glass or clear plastic, allowing light to penetrate and create a visible environment. Common containers include jars, aquariums, and specially designed terrariums.
  2. Drainage Layer: Often consists of gravel, pebbles, or activated charcoal to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom and causing root rot.
  3. Substrate: A layer of soil or growing medium suitable for the types of plants being grown. The soil should be well-draining to avoid waterlogging.
  4. Plants: A variety of plants can be used, depending on the terrarium’s design (open or closed). Common choices include ferns, mosses, succulents, and air plants. Closed terrariums generally house tropical plants that thrive in humidity, while open terrariums are better for succulents and cacti.
  5. Decorative Elements: Items like rocks, figurines, and decorative stones can be added to enhance the visual appeal and create a mini-landscape.

Grown N’ Glow Terrarium Care Tips:

  • Light: Place the terrarium in a location with appropriate light levels for the plants inside. Most terrariums do well in bright, indirect light.
  • Watering: Water sparingly, as terrariums retain moisture well. Closed terrariums need less frequent watering compared to open ones. That’s why the kit comes with a mister.
  • Ventilation: Occasionally open closed terrariums to allow air exchange and prevent mold growth. The lid that comes with the kit has star-shaped air holes for ventilation.
