A lot of recipes for slime, including several on this blog, involve glue. We were totally out of Elmer’s so I started searching for a recipe for slime that used no glue, and very simple ingredients that we were likely to already have.
We ran across several involving a mix of soap, water and corn starch. I happen to know we had those three items in in the pantry, plus food coloring for a little pizazz, so we set out to make some homemade slime.
If you happen to have white glue for your slime, check out our other post for 3 Recipes for Slime

Homemade Slime Recipe Without Glue
The recipe we used:
1/2 cup thick gel or soap – We used a thick shower gel, and it ended up smelling really weird. So be careful with what scent you choose, because you’ll be smelling it a lot.
3 drops food coloring – It was supposed to be blue, so next time we’ll add a lot more food coloring! You can leave the food coloring out if you just want white slime. Or you could mix in something fun like fine glitter.
2 1/2 cups cornstarch – This took about half my can of corn starch, so make sure you have enough.
1/3 cup water – We ended up using more than the recipe called for, because it seemed so dry and crumbly at first. But then we put in too much and it got weird and gooey. So then we added a little more corn starch.
Mix the gel and food coloring together, then add the corn starch and pour a little water in at a time until you have slime.
But Was It Slimy?
No matter how much we adjusted the water and the corn starch, it never got just the right consistency. It was always had a little more of the properties of Oobleck, which is basically what it is- Oobleck plus soap. If you haven’t heard of Oobleck, it’s just water and corn starch.
Even though it wasn’t a totally successful slime making event, it was still fun to play with! Check out the video on Keelan’s YouTube channel:
So if you are looking to make traditional slime, this glue-free mix is not the way to go. But if you want to make an easy slime-like mix, that’s still fun to play with, we recommend giving it a try.
