It’s that time of year again! The Elf on the Shelf will start making appearances all over the world to watch over kids and report back to Santa. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a newbie to this festive tradition, there’s always something magical about the mischievous little elf that graces our homes during the holiday season. The Origins of Elf on the Shelf
The story of Elf on the Shelf began with a children’s book written by Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell. Published in 2005, the book tells the tale of Santa’s scout elves who visit homes during the holiday season. These elves, assigned to keep an eye on children’s behavior, report back to Santa each night, ensuring the nice list is up to date.
What is Elf on the Shelf?
Elf on the Shelf isn’t just a story; it’s a delightful tradition that brings joy and excitement to households around the world. The set typically includes a hardbound book and a small elf figurine. You can choose whether you want a girl or a boy. We got a boy, and my son named him Scout. (I thought that was very unoriginal, but he stuck with it)
Families read the book together, introducing the elf’s purpose and magical abilities. The elf can’t talk, but you can talk to him. And no touching the elf or he loses his magic and just becomes a regular doll.
The real fun begins when the elf takes its place in the home, moving to a new spot every night. Some people just move the elf around, but some people get very creative and have the elf get into all kinds of mischief.
And some people (like me this year) make it easy and fun with a kit full of planned elf activities and all the materials and props you need for each scene! Click here to check out the Elf on the Shelf Kit on Amazon.

Some Creative Ideas for Elf Antics:
- Classic Hiding Spots: Place your elf in the traditional spots like the Christmas tree, mantle, or window sill. This builds anticipation for children who eagerly search for their mischievous friend each morning.
- Cooking Up Fun: Position your elf in the kitchen, surrounded by mini baking supplies or ingredients. Leave a note suggesting the elf is ready to bake some magical cookies, and maybe even leave a tiny apron or chef’s hat.
- Elf Movie Night: Arrange a mini movie night with the elf surrounded by popcorn, tiny tickets, and a selection of holiday films. This is a great way to create a cozy family tradition.
- Artsy Antics: Encourage your elf to showcase its creative side. Set up a miniature art studio with tiny canvases, paintbrushes, and paint pots. Your child will wake up to discover the elf’s masterpiece.
- North Pole Correspondence: Have your elf deliver special letters from the North Pole, providing updates on the child’s behavior and encouraging good deeds.
Elf on the Shelf has become a cherished holiday tradition, weaving magic and excitement into the hearts of families worldwide. And whether your elf is an expert adventurer or a rookie mischief-maker, the memories created during this festive tradition will undoubtedly last a lifetime.
Happy elfing!
