Happy National Two Different Color Eyes Day! All About Heterochromia

My mom has one blue and one brown eye, and I always thought it was the neatest thing. Growing up, I kept hoping one of my blue eyes would turn brown like hers! Today, July 12th, marks National Two Different Colored Eyes Day to recognize the condition known as heterochromia and celebrate its unique beauty.

Heterochromia: The Mesmerizing Beauty of Diverse Eyes

Heterochromia is a genetic or acquired condition that results in an individual having eyes with different colors. This captivating trait occurs due to variations in the amount or distribution of melanin, the pigment responsible for eye color. There are three main types of heterochromia

  1. Complete Heterochromia: Each eye has a distinct and contrasting color. For instance, one eye may be blue while the other is brown or green.
  2. Sectoral Heterochromia: A portion of one iris has a different color than the rest. This creates a unique and mesmerizing pattern within the eye, such as a splash or ring of a different hue.
  3. Central Heterochromia: The iris transitions from one color to another, creating a stunning blend or gradient effect. This can result in captivating eyes that appear multi-colored or have a distinctive inner ring.

Heterochromia can be present at birth (congenital) or develop later in life (acquired). Congenital heterochromia is often inherited and can be associated with certain medical conditions or genetic disorders. Acquired heterochromia can be caused by eye injuries, diseases, or certain medications.

A few Interesting facts-

  • My mom was born with a blue eye and a brown eye, although the blue one sometimes fluctuates with bits of brown in it, so the eyes can still change color.
  • Australian Shepherds often have two different colored eyes due to hereditary. My aussie has one light blue and one amber colored eye.
  • Latisse, the medication prescribed to lengthen lashes, can also change your blue eyes to brown. It’s one of the possible side effects!
  • Several famous people have two different color eyes: David Bowie, Christopher Walken, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Seymour, and Mila Kunis.
