Blogging has evolved from a personal hobby into a lucrative side hustle for many moms, as blogs often dominate search results. My own blogging career started as a side hustle and later grew into a full-time job.
With the right strategy, dedication, and a dash of creativity, blogging can become a rewarding way to earn extra income while sharing your passions with the world.
Why Blogging Makes a Great Side Hustle for Moms
Blogging offers the flexibility and potential to transform your free time into a profitable endeavor. However, it does take a little bit of hustle to get it going!
Also, a lot of times, there’s no such thing as “free time” for moms, especially for those with small children. The great thing about blogging is that you can grow it at your own pace, whenever you can fit it in.
One of the biggest advantages of blogging as a side hustle is its low barrier to entry. You don’t need a degree in marketing or technical expertise to start. Platforms like WordPress, Wix, and Blogger offer user-friendly interfaces that allow even beginners to set up a blog in minutes. I’ve been using WordPress for over 10 years now and have always had a good experience.
With minimal initial investment—often just a domain name and hosting fee—blogging is an affordable side hustle compared to other ventures. As a side note, if you want to make money with your blog, you should go with a .com domain from the start. Don’t use a free website address.
Blogging is also highly flexible. Unlike traditional part-time jobs that demand specific hours, blogging allows you to work at your own pace, fitting your writing and content creation around your existing schedule. This is why there are so many “mommy bloggers“!
Plus, it enables you to focus on topics you’re passionate about, making it an enjoyable experience rather than a chore.

Steps to Start a Successful Blogging Side Hustle
- Choose Your Niche
To stand out in the crowded blogosphere, focus on a specific niche. Whether it’s fitness, travel, parenting, or personal finance, selecting a topic that you’re knowledgeable and passionate about will help you create engaging and consistent content. - Set Up Your Blog
Invest in a domain name and reliable hosting to give your blog a professional look. A clean, easy-to-navigate design will help attract and retain readers. - Create Valuable Content
Content is king in the blogging world. Focus on providing valuable, actionable, and engaging posts that solve problems or entertain your audience. Regularly update your blog to keep readers coming back.
And remember: valuable content means actually writing the posts, NOT relying on AI to write them for you! - Promote Your Blog
Use social media platforms to share your content and connect with your audience. Engaging on platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest can drive significant traffic to your blog. One of my biggest sources of traffic comes from Pinterest. - Monetize Your Blog
Once you have a steady stream of visitors, explore blog monetization options. Popular methods include affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, selling digital products, and placing ads on your site through programs like Google AdSense.
How Blogging Generates Income
The key to earning money through blogging is building an engaged audience. Once you have traffic, you can leverage it in several ways:
- Affiliate Marketing: Partner with companies to promote their products, earning a commission on sales made through your affiliate links.
- Sponsored Content: Collaborate with brands to create posts that highlight their products or services, for which you receive payment.
- Ad Revenue: Display ads on your blog through networks like Google AdSense or Mediavine, earning income based on impressions or clicks.
- Digital Products: Sell eBooks, online courses, or printable templates directly to your audience.
- Services: Offer services like consulting, coaching, or freelance writing to capitalize on your expertise.
Challenges of Blogging as a Side Hustle
While blogging offers many benefits, it’s not without challenges. Building a successful blog requires time and effort. You may start small, with blogging about “gifted” items first before actually getting paid.
You’ll need to consistently produce high-quality content, stay updated on SEO trends, and market your blog effectively. The results may not be immediate, and it could take months before you see significant traffic or income. It took me a year before I saw an income from my first blog.
But don’t let that discourage you! That was also when I was treating blogging as a side hustle only and not giving it 100% effort. I was just blogging here and there when I felt like it. But it was a start!
Additionally, balancing blogging with your full-time commitments can be tricky. Time management and setting realistic goals are crucial to maintaining productivity without burning out. The burnout is real!
Tips for Long-Term Success
To sustain your blogging side hustle, focus on long-term growth:
- Learn Continuously: Stay informed about blogging trends, SEO updates, and social media strategies.
- Engage with Your Audience: Respond to comments and emails to build a loyal readership.
- Diversify Income Streams: Don’t rely on just one monetization method. Explore multiple income avenues to maximize profitability.
- Stay Consistent: Regular posting keeps your blog active and helps with search engine rankings.
From Side Job to Main Career
Blogging as a side hustle is more than just an income opportunity; it’s a chance to share your voice and connect with a global audience. With dedication, strategic planning, and a passion for your niche, you can turn your blog into a thriving venture, possibly even a new career.
I had no idea where it would lead when I started blogging 10 years ago! But I have loved the journey and continue to look forward to blogging every day.
So, whether your goal is to earn extra cash, build a personal brand, or eventually transition to full-time blogging, the possibilities are endless. Start your journey today and watch your side hustle grow into something extraordinary.
