I Tried Tinsel Extensions, AKA Fairy Hair

The last time I got my hair done, my stylist offered to put in a few tinsel extensions, which is also called “fairy hair.” Tinsel extensions add a little bit of sparkle to your and are often put in the underneath layers, so they peek out and just give a subtle flash of sparkle.

Adding a Little Sparkle to Your Hair

While these fairy hair tinsel extensions are often done at events for $2-$5 a strand, you can get an entire pack with multiple colors and the tools you’ll need to do them, all for under $10.

The extensions don’t require any glue or previous extension experience. You just use the hair tool provided to pull the hair and tinsel into a small tube and then clamp the tube shut.

When you are ready to remove them, just clamp the tube again to open it up and slide off the tinsel.

Tips for Adding Tinsel Extensions

  1. Add just a few and space them out. The key is to give your hair a flash of unexpected sparkle.
  2. Get them close to the scalp, but not too close! It starts to hurt after a bit of the hair is clamped too close. I had to unclamp and redo mine a little farther down.
  3. They blend best with straight hair, because the tinsel is straight. The instructions do say you can curl them on the lowest heat setting, but every time we tried it would just make a really tight curl. So, while it is possible, it’s not that easy unless you have a curling iron that can be set on a very low temperature.

These extensions are great because they are easy to put in, easy to remove and give a fun splash of color without causing any damage. They do make it a little weird when trying to brush or comb your hair, because you have to avoid ripping out the clamps. But overall, they are easy to care for.

A pack of these would make a fun party favor or slumber party activity!
