I wanted my hair to be a bit festive this holiday season, so I went to Jenna at Wicked Beauty Jax for red and green Christmas hair color highlights. I love the way it turned out!

Red and Green Hair Colors for Christmas
Jenna wove the red and green streaks through the under layers of my hair, so they peek out here and there. She also added few in the front sections.
The hair color she used is a semi-permanent red by Joico and Absinthe by Pulp Riot. The absinthe color is a deep green rather than a bright apple green. Together they make great Christmas colors.
These colors are deposit-only, so they aren’t damaging and are only adding color. If you have darker hair, you’d need to lighten the strands before adding color.

Caring for Colorful Highlights
When caring for colorful highlights, it’s important to keep your hair healthy while maintaining the vibrancy of the color. Here are a few tips to help you care for your colorful highlights:
- Use Color-Safe Shampoo: Regular shampoos can strip hair of color, so choose a color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo. These are specifically designed to protect the vibrancy of your highlights.
- Wash in cold water: Washing colored hair in cold water helps to close the hair cuticle, which locks in the color and prevents it from fading quickly.
- Condition Regularly: Color-treated hair tends to dry out more easily. Use a moisturizing conditioner to keep your hair hydrated and to prevent the color from fading. Consider a deep-conditioning treatment once a week for extra nourishment.
- Avoid Heat Styling: Excessive heat can cause color to fade more quickly, so try to limit the use of flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers. If you must use heat tools, apply a heat protectant spray first.
- Protect From the Sun: UV rays can fade hair color, so wear a hat or use a UV-protectant hair spray to shield your highlights from direct sunlight.
- Limit Washing: The more frequently you wash your hair, the faster the color will fade. Try to wash your hair 2–3 times a week, or less, to help preserve your colorful highlights.
- Avoid Chlorine: Chlorine from swimming pools can strip the color from your hair. If you plan to swim, wear a swim cap or apply a leave-in conditioner to protect your hair.
By following these care tips, you can keep your colorful highlights looking fresh and vibrant for longer!
Ready for a Color Change?
You may be wondering how long the results last and what I’m going to do after Christmas when I no longer want red and green highlights. This is the plan-
- Use a Clarifying shampoo to deep clean the hair and remove some of the color.
- Wash in warm water to open the cuticle and help the color come out.
- Use a color remover if needed. I try to avoid using any stripping products, but sometimes it is neccessary.
- If you don’t strip the color, you can choose colors based on color theory to replace the colored strands. Certain colors cancel the other colors out. For example, when I wanted to get rid of my blue streaks, I covered it with orange. The resulting color was a dark blond.
And the time I accidentally turned my whole head green; I cancelled out the green by adding a red. The resulting color was a deep purple shade.
The great thing about having someone else do the color professionally is that they can be precise! It’s very hard to do color like this on your own and not get it everywhere and have it bleed into to other sections. To get the best look, go with a professional who will do your head with foils and color only the parts that need to be colored.
