TikTok has some strange and creepy trends, and the lip balm trend and Chapstick challenge may sound like the latest makeup fad, but they’re actually trends involving self-harm. I accidentally stumbled onto this when looking for actual makeup trends.
TikTok has been diligently removing the lip balm trend videos, but the last one I saw racked up 11k views before it was pulled.
When the Lip Balm Runs Out
If you run across one of these lip balm trend videos, it will probably leave you scratching your head and just wondering, why?
It usually involves just a video of a hand and a tube of lip balm or Chapstick. The person rolls the tube all the way up and then all the way down, while sad music plays.
The meaning of the post is that the person will harm themselves when the lip balm runs out. So, the lip balm is like a death countdown of sorts.
This is one trend I do NOT endorse trying!
Other variations include a person looking upset or crying, and saying their lip balm has run out.
The Other Chapstick Challenge
There’s another lip balm trend specifically involving flavored Chapstick that’s not so morbid. So, the Chapstick Challenge can refer to either of these trends.
It’s all about the other person guessing the flavor of the Chapstick. The person is either kissed by someone wearing the lip balm, or the person is blindfolded while someone puts the Chapstick on them.
The challenge is just to guess the flavor. Much more innocent than the other trend!
The Lip Balm Trend to Leave Alone
As with any viral challenge or trend, it’s important to approach them with discernment. Announcing you plan to harm yourself on social media is not funny and not the way to get attention.
