Are Moonlight Butterfly Begonias Real?

I stumbled across a viral Facebook post of beautiful Moonlight Butterfly Begonias, featuring a plant with purple flowers that resemble butterflies. The description claims it is not AI, and there is even a website Imseeds that sells the seeds. So, are Butterfly Begonias real or not?

Beware of Imseeds Fake Butterfly Begonia Plants

Unfortunately, the Moonlight Butterfly Begonia is completely AI generated, along with everything else on the Imseeds website. They have a lot of amazing looking plants for sale, all with fake photos.

As much as I would love for their plants to be real, it’s extremely obvious these don’t exist in real life! Just check out the Cat’s Eye Flowers below. Who wouldn’t want some Cat’s Eye Panda Face flowers for their garden?

Imseeds Website Bad Reputation

Not surprisingly, a quick check on the validity of the Imseeds website reveals it’s not a safe site to use. The site is registered in China and is on domain blacklists. It is also listed under the spam/scam category in many website checking sites.

This is what is shown after plugging the Imseeds website into ScamVoid.net:

imseeds not safe website, sells fake flowers and seeds

Every single plant photo on their site, and the description is a work of AI fiction. But it is all set-up so you can easily place and order and give them all your personal details and credit card info.

I am assuming they just steal your info and never send any seeds, but even if they do send you seeds, I’m sorry to tell you it’s not going to grow a Moonlight Butterfly Begonia or any other kind of fantasy plant.

If you have placed an order with Imseeds, I suggest you check your credit card accounts or whatever payment method you used for fraud.

The Real Butterly Begonia

A begonia is a type of flowering plant that belongs to the family Begoniaceae, which includes over 2,000 species. Begonias are known for their beautiful, asymmetrical leaves and vibrant flowers. They are popular as both houseplants and garden plants because of their striking appearance and variety of forms.

Types of Begonias:

Begonias are commonly divided into three main categories based on their root structure:

  1. Fibrous-rooted begonias – Examples include wax begonias, which are commonly used as bedding plants.
  2. Tuberous begonias – These are prized for their showy flowers.
  3. Rhizomatous begonias – Known for their ornamental foliage.

Begonias with Butterly-like Leaves

While there isn’t a specific species called a “butterfly begonia,” the term could refer to begonias with butterfly-like leaves or patterns. Some begonias have wing-shaped leaves or intricate foliage that resembles butterfly wings. For instance:

  • Begonia rex (Rex begonia) is admired for its vibrant, patterned foliage, which can look like butterfly wings.
  • Begonia ‘Angel Wing’ has elongated, wing-shaped leaves and might be associated with the term “butterfly” because of its resemblance to wings.

So, while the Moonlight Butterfly Begonia may not be real, there are still some beautiful real-life begonias that have similar characteristics!
