What is the Pre-Shower Makeup Trend on TikTok?

I stumbled across a TikTok trend called pre-shower makeup, and realized I’d been unknowingly trendy for years.

I was expecting it to be some kind of makeup technique where the shower sets your makeup, or makes it more dewy, but I was far off the mark. It’s literally just doing your makeup right before you shower, and then washing it all off.

By why, you might wonder?

What is Pre-Shower Makeup?

The “pre-shower makeup” trend, which has become popular on TikTok, involves applying makeup right before taking a shower. The idea is that it allows people to experiment with bold or new looks, such as vibrant blushes, contouring or tricky eyeliner techniques, without the pressure of wearing it out in public.

If the makeup turns out great, you can recreate it later, and if it doesn’t, it’s easily washed off in the shower. It also gives you a chance to practice new techniques, like perfecting a winged liner or lining your lips.

The thing I find funny is that this is something people have been doing this forever…it’s not a trend. I always just called it “playing dress up” or “playing with makeup”…and I do it all the time.

If it turns out good, I take photos. If it doesn’t then I just wash it all off.

So apparently all this time I could have been making trendy TikTok videos!

Why Should You Give this Trend a Try?

If you haven’t ever experimented with makeup with no intention of leaving the house, then I highly recommend giving the pre-shower makeup trend a try!

It’s a fun and creative outlet with no pressure. You can be as wild as you want with the makeup. It’s also the perfect time to try new makeup trends and techniques for the first time.

If you do try pre-shower makeup, I recommend having a good makeup remover ready. My preferred product after doing a full face of makeup (glitter included) is a cleansing balm. I put that on first, before I even get in the shower, and it melts away most of the makeup.

Then when I’m in the shower, I do a final wash with a gentle face cleanser to get all the leftover bits.

Drawbacks of Pre-shower Makeup

There are a couple drawbacks to doing pre-shower makeup- one is the possible waste of expensive makeup, and the other is the extra time it takes to fully remove it.

If you are experimenting with blush or contouring, it’s easy to wash off, but once you start adding glitter or glue things get a bit tougher. I often have to take extra time to remove stuck-on eyelash glue if I’m experimenting with lashes.

Despite this, I still think this “trend” is a great low-pressure way to explore makeup techniques, level up your skills and even boost your creativity.
