Meet Roy Keane, Soccer Star, Bottle Person

My son brought home a school project where he had to create a Biography Bottle and he chose Roy Keane, since he is actually a cousin on his dad‘s side of the family!

The teacher let the kids choose three historical figures they would like to research. My son’s choices were John Cena, Roy Keane and Micheal Jackson. I had no idea he even knew who Micheal Jackson was, but I was sort of hoping he would get him so we could make one sparkly glove and do the MJ from the 80s. But Roy Keane was the winner!

The Biography Bottle Project

A biography bottle is a bottle made to look like a historical figure, past or present, who has made an important contribution to our world.

Our directions were to take a 2-liter soda bottle, empty and clean it, and then weigh it down with rocks or sand.

The next steps are to add a head, face, hair, outfit and details that represent your person. They also suggest adding props.

The students also do a written report about their chosen person.

Making Roy Keane

Since Roy Keane is a famous soccer player and coach, we planned to put him in a soccer uniform. The tricky part was figuring out how a 9-year-old boy can actually make this without mom jumping in and making it for him.

We started with a small soda bottle and filled the bottom with sand for stability.

I sacrificed a sock to cover a tennis ball for his head. Then we pulled the sock down over the whole bottle which gave him a bit of a wobbly head. We should have glued it on there, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. We’d later discover poor Roy’s head had a tendency to fall over easily.

We used a piece of fluffy marabou for his hair, and my son drew his face on with markers. I thought it was funny he gave him a big smile since Roy is famous for his temper. We made a happy Roy Keane.

His clothes were the hardest part. I could have just easily sewed him a little outfit, but it was important that my son actually do his own project, so we came up with making a shirt and shorts out of craft foam, and then glued his numbers to the back and patches to the front.

We found a small white ball and my son drew a soccer ball pattern on it for Roy’s very important accessory.

Overall, I thought he did a really good job bringing bottle person Roy Keane to life!

*After the picture, we went in and colored the back of his head, so he didn’t look bald from behind. I’m sure Roy would appreciate that, lol.

  1. Great post about your son’s Roy Keane project! Creative way to learn about a soccer legend. Is your son interested in playing football himself? There are lots of great kids leagues in the UK.

  2. This is a really fun idea! I think my kids will love it! They’ve been so great as we’ve been remodeling a bit lately, and as I hear the mold damage company working downstairs, I really would like to do some things for my kids to give them a break. Little things like this seem perfect, thank you for sharing the instructions!
