Mardi Gras 2027 falls on Tuesday, February 9, but there is an entire carnival season happening that leads up to the big day! I got to enjoy the festivities and craziness of Mardi Gras back in the late ’90s, and I still have some of the masks and beads from my trip. It was quite an experience!

History of Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras has its roots in medieval Europe and was brought to the United States by French settlers. The celebration has evolved over the years, with the first event happening in 1703 in Mobile, Alabama.

However, it was in the 19th century that New Orleans, Louisiana, emerged as the primary hub for Mardi Gras festivities. The city’s first recorded Mardi Gras parade took place in 1837, marking the beginning of its association with elaborate parades, masked revelers, and vibrant krewes.

The name “Mardi Gras” is French for “Fat Tuesday,” marking the day before the Christian season of Lent begins. Lent is a period of fasting and reflection, so Mardi Gras serves as a time of indulgence and revelry.

Krewes, Clubs and Parades

Mardi Gras krewes, social clubs that organize events during the season, play a central role, contributing to the diversity of the celebration with themed parades and balls. The iconic colors of Mardi Gras—purple, green, and gold—symbolize justice, faith, and power respectively, and are featured prominently in costumes, decorations, and floats. The tradition of wearing masks and costumes during Mardi Gras adds an element of anonymity, allowing participants to engage in uninhibited and playful behavior.

The festival has evolved over time, becoming a major cultural event celebrated not only in New Orleans but also in various cities globally. Modern Mardi Gras includes a wide array of events, from huge parades to extravagant balls and lively street parties.

Throws, such as plastic beads, doubloons, chocolates and small toys, are tossed to the crowd during parades. Catching these items is considered good luck. Mardi Gras remains a dynamic and ever-evolving celebration that reflects the cultural diversity and traditions contributing to its iconic status.
