Has Anyone Actually Had Their WordPress Plan Gifted?

Sometime in the past year or so, WordPress started giving people an option to have a banner at the top of their website that says, “Enjoy this site? Gift the author a WordPress.com plan.”

So it got me wondering, HAS anyone actually had this happen? or is it really just a great marketing move by WordPress to get everyone to advertise them at the top of their page for free?

See WordPress Gift Notice Below:

While I feel like chances are slim that someone will take me up on this banner, I also don’t want to miss out just in case one day, the magical WordPress reading fairy happens upon my blog and wants to bestow upon me the gift of a WordPress plan, or even a simple upgrade.

If anyone reading this has actually had it happen, PLEASE leave a comment! I would love to hear about it. I’ve seen it a lot, but never talked to anyone who’s had it happen before.

It does sort of bug me every time I see it there, and I’m tempted to remove it. But then I’m like….what if…. and I leave it!

Because taking it down means it will definitely not happen. And what fun is that?

One Year Later, Any Luck?

Well, here we are one year later, and I forgot it was still up there until I got a comment on this post today. Of course, I forgot it was there because nobody uses it, lol.

But the commenter made a very good point- WordPress and bloggers would have better luck if they let people gift small amounts towards the plan and not the whole amount.

Or in my case the whole amount for two years! When you click Gift the Author a WordPress Plan, it automatically adds two years, plus my domain to the basket for a total cost of $175. That’s asking a lot!

I guess I might have to wait a while for that magical WordPress fairy, lol.

  1. I don’t think so, mainly because it required paying a whole subscription (in your case it’s 175 bucks).

I might work if your audience can pay a fraction of the fee (like 1 usd) which then would be deducted from your cost…

    1. $175? Is that what it says it costs? I had to go check! I see now what it’s doing- it’s trying to charge for 2 years upfront because I normally pay 2 years at a time. That’s ridiculous! You are completely right that it would be way better for it to be like, gift $1 or some simple amount. Might actually get something there lol.
