A new podcast for kids launched on May 30th as a prequel to the Molly of Denali TV series premiering on PBS on July 15, 2019. Every Thursday a new episode will be launched, where you can follow the adventures of Molly Mabray, 10-year old girl who helps her parents run the Denali Trading Post in the fictional Alaskan village of Qyah. The eight episodes, releasing weekly through July 11, help set the stage for the animated PBS Kids series.
*We are happy to partner with PRX to promote this exciting new children’s adventure series with roots in native storytelling. Compensation was provided for this post, though opinions are my own
Molly helps her mom and dad run the Denali Trading Post, which is a general store, bunkhouse, and transport hub. Over the eight podcast episodes, Molly and her best friend Tooey discover the identity of a mystery creature that has stolen Molly’s birthday cake. You’ll also learn about how Molly’s parents came to run the trading post, and how their dog Suki became part of her family.
The podcast is a first for PBS Kids, and the premise is rooted in the tradition of Native Alaskan storytelling. The series is also the first nationally distributed kids’ show in the U.S. to feature a Native American lead. All Indigenous characters are voiced by Indigenous actors, including Molly, voiced by 14-year-old Alaska Native, Sovereign Bill.
The podcast blends the oral storytelling traditions of Alaska Natives with the adventures of the modern-day Molly and compliments the TV series by providing an introduction to Molly’s life full of colorful characters and adventures. Her mother is a bush pilot, her dad a wilderness guide, her best friend takes her dog sledding and her grandfather is a volcanologist.
Each episode is short, under 15 minutes, and you can listen to episodes on the website, or download them in any podcast app. Join Molly and the gang and discover what life is like for a typical kid on big adventures in Alaska!
You can also connect with Molly on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
